Scholarship will be awarded to high school seniors graduating from Greenbrier East High School residing in the former Alderson High School attendance area that are continuing their education at a college or accredited vocational school. Students must:
  • Exhibit financial need

  • Exhibit positive personal and academic characteristics

A one-time award.  Amount granted varies depending on the interest rate but is typically several hundred dollars.

This scholarship affirms the value of education and encourages the recipients to persevere in the face of adversity.  It is awarded to proclaim the belief, based on the recommendations of teachers and friends, that these individuals have the qualities and abilities to meet whatever challenges they may encounter. The scholarship is available to graduating seniors enrolled at a public or private high school in Pocahontas County who are planning to continue their education.  The recipients of the award will exhibit scholarship, integrity, dedication, and commitment.

The recipients will be selected on the basis of achievement and performance as established by the following areas:
  • academic achievement as indicated by high school grade point average and scores on college entrance exams
  • participation in extra and/or co-curricular activities at school and/or participation in activities which enhance the quality of life in the community
  • character as shown through recommendations - one recommendation must be from a high school teacher discussing academics and one recommendation must be from a community member discussing community service
  • an essay of two to four pages in length entitled, "With the right breaks, I would like to..."





Appalachian Headwaters Scholarship

This scholarship supports college access in environmental careers for Greenbrier and Summers County seniors.
  • Special consideration for first generation college students
  • Special consideration for students demonstrating an interest in the environment (no specific subject area) and community service
  • Maximum of two new awards expected each year

If awarded the scholarship, the applicant must maintain a GPA above 3.0 or else the scholarship will be put on a semester length probation period for payments until GPA reaches 3.0 or higher.





Bank of Monroe Scholarship

The Bank of Monroe scholarship for students at Greenbrier East High School.  Requirements are as follows:
  • GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • High moral character
  • Involved in school activities
Preference is given to students planning to major in business who are not receiving more than two (2) other scholarships.





BEULAH MOORE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Awarded to one or more students from Pocahontas County High School to attend a two or four year accredited academic institution.  The applicants must be:
  • a student in good academic standing (ranking in the top one-third of his/her class) and should possess the demonstrated abilities and skills to succeed in college work.
  • interested in pursuing a business or finance field of study
  • a person of high moral character as exemplified by the life of Beulah D. Moore.  Honesty, reliability and a good attitude toward school and community are important considerations.
The financial needs of the applicant will be considered.

Scholarship will be awarded to two high school seniors graduating from Greenbrier East High School to attend college or an accredited vocational school. Students must:
  • Have a strong academic record

Candance J. Huffman Memorial Scholarship

A renewable award for Pocahontas County residents.
 

The scholarship is available to graduating seniors enrolled at a public or private high school in Pocahontas County, or any resident of Pocahontas County, who are planning a career in animal science.

The recipient will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • Acceptance into or enrollment in an accredited animal science program

  • Interview

  • Recommendation from a teacher or community member

  • An essay entitled "How do you see a career in animal sciences fulfilling your future”

 






CLARK AND HELEN BRUMAGIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A potentially renewable award of $1,250.00

This scholarship will be presented to one male and one female graduating senior from Pocahontas County High School. The scholarship will be based on the following criteria:
  1. Attending a college or university of higher education for at least four years
  2. Financial need
  3. Scholastic standing.
 
Grants shall be made in eight (8) semi-annual payments based on proof of successful academic standing.

Scholarship shall be awarded to at least one graduating senior from Greenbrier East High School and one from Greenbrier West High School to attend an accredited institution of higher education.  Recipients must:
  • Have participated in any high school sports team for at least three (3) years

  • Exhibit financial need
  • Exhibit positive personal and academic characteristics





D. K. CALES ENDOWMENT TRUST SCHOLARSHIP

Scholarship will be awarded to at least 4 high school seniors graduating from Greenbrier West High School, Meadow Bridge High School, or Midland Trail High School.  Students must exhibit positive personal characteristics.  Preference will be given to students planning to major in one of the sciences, especially those that are planning to pursue a career in dentistry or medicine.

Eligibility:
Scholarship awarded to high school seniors from the Frankford School attendance area that are continuing their education at a college or technical school. Preference will be given to students who attended Frankford Elementary School.

  • Letter of recommendation from a member of Frankford Ruritan Club





Frederick A. Walker Memorial Scholarship

A one-time award of $500.00

The Frederick A. Walker Memorial Scholarship Fund will present a $500.00 scholarship to a James Monroe High School student who exemplifies a strong work ethic and love for their community.
Eligibility:
  1. Applicant must be a graduating senior from James Monroe High School.
  2. Applicant must demonstrate a need for financial assistance
  3. Recipient will be selected on the basis of financial need, character, and  community service activities
  4. A statement about your community must accompany the application. Please include current career goals and reasons for selecting this career. 
Applicant may be asked to appear before a Scholarship Committee for a brief interview
 





Gay and Becky Shinaberry Scholarship

A renewable award of $5,250.00 per year for 4 years

Scholarship will be awarded to help one young woman from the Pocahontas County High School whose parents have yet to earn a college degree. The award is renewable contingent on the student making normal progress towards obtaining a bachelor’s degree and maintaining good standing academically and socially as defined by the institution she is attending.

The Beth Buck Scholarship is a companion scholarship that provides the recipient with a one-time additional award of $1,000.00 to be spent in the first year of college for school supplies.

 





Greenbrier 4-H Visual Presentation Scholarship

An active 4-H’er in Greenbrier County who is a senior in high school, or between the ages of 18-21 and still in 4-H, is eligible for a $500 one-time education scholarship to an accredited trade school or college. 
The 4-H'er must have participated for a minimum of 4 years in the county visual presentation contest.
The 4-H'er must have given a visual presentation (illustrated talk / demonstration or public speaking) for at least 2 years out of the 4 years.
 





GREENBRIER COUNTY EDUCATION ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP

  • The applicant must be a graduating senior of GEHS or GWHS
  • One parent must be a member of Greenbrier County Education Association (GCEA)

GREENBRIER COUNTY SCHOOLS FOUNDATION, INC. DAVID YARID MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A recurring award totaling $2,000.00
 
This scholarship, awarded by the family of David Yarid, who graduated from Greenbrier East in 1977, is for a minimum of $2000 to be given in $500 increments for 4 years. It is awarded annually to a graduating senior of GEHS who demonstrates outstanding achievement in the field of business in high school and who plans to pursue a college education in business. The recipient in chosen by the faculty in the Business department at GEHS. It is also noted that the recipient must be present at the awards program in order to receive the scholarship.

Eligibility:
  • Graduating from GEHS
  • Must demonstrate outstanding achievement in the field of business while in high school
  • Must attend the scholarship awards program





GREENBRIER COUNTY SCHOOLS FOUNDATION, INC. STEPHEN BALDWIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship, established by Charlotte Baldwin in memory of her late husband Steve, the former superintendent of Schools for Greenbrier County, will be awarded annually to one or more high school seniors in Greenbrier County. Recipients must attend an accredited college or vocational school and display positive personal characteristics and strong work ethic. A scholarship committee will select recipients.

  • Graduating from a Greenbrier County high school
  • Must attend an accredited college or vocational school

GREENBRIER MILITARY SCHOOL LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP

A renewable award of $3,000.00 per year for 4 years

Scholarship will be awarded to at least one graduating senior from both Greenbrier East High School and Greenbrier West High School. Students applying for the scholarship must fulfill three requirements: 1) read a book on leadership selected by GMSAA and the Greenbrier County School District; 2) visit the Greenbrier Military School Museum; 3) complete short answer and essay questions responsive to the leadership book, the visit to the GMS museum, and the students’ general understanding of leadership qualities.

 





Greenbrier Valley Home Builders Association Scholarship

A two semester award totaling $1000.00
 
A $500 cash scholarship will be awarded each semester. The eligible student must be continuing in a post-secondary education building construction certification or degree program. The scholarship will be dispersed in two cash awards: The first $500 beginning the first semester and the second $500 beginning the second semester. It is the responsibility of the student to provide the Homebuilders Association proof of registration in an eligible certification or degree program.

Criteria considerations include financial need, academic achievement, school and community involvement, and character. Applicants must express serious commitment to the pursuit of a career in building construction and must be prepared to meet with the Homebuilders Association for an interview.

Eligibility:
  • Student of Greenbrier East or Greenbrier West High School
  • Student must complete the four Core Courses in Building Construction
  • Student must pass the four EOC Tests for each core course
  • Student must be entering a building construction certification or degree program

 





GREENBRIER VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER ALLIED HEALTH SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established by the Williamsburg Ruritan Club, Williamsburg Community Action, and Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church in 2022.  Jack Goodman was a person who was very involved in his community by volunteering and caring.  He made our community better.

JAMES JOSEPH " J.J." O'BRIEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The J.J. O'Brien Memorial Foundation Scholarship was established to honor J.J.'s desire to see everyone achieve dreams and live life to the fullest.  The recipient will be chosen solely by the J.J. O'Brien Memorial Foundation Scholarship Committee and shall be interviewed by this committee.  Student must:
  • Be a high school senior graduating from Greenbrier East High School
  • Have been accepted at a West Virginia university, college, or vocational school 
  • Exhibit financial need
  • Write an essay about something that he/she is particularly interested in and especially passionate about.

*Two payments will be disbursed by the scholarship committee - one payment at the beginning of each semester of the student's first year.  Checks will be sent to the student's school of choice at which they have proof of acceptance.

This scholarship honors Janis Trent Reed and her career as a home economics teacher at White Sulphur Springs Junior High School.

Scholarship will be awarded to high school seniors graduating from Greenbrier East or Greenbrier West High Schools who are continuing their education at an accredited vocational school.  An award is made to one female and one male student each year.

Criteria for consideration includes the following:
  • A resident of Greenbrier County
  • GPA of 2.75 or better
  • Essay must include why you are interested in attending a trade or vocational school and field you are interested in pursuing
  • At least two (2) letters of recommendation
  • An interview may be conducted

Scholarship shall be awarded to a graduating student from Greenbrier East High School who is planning to pursue higher education in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. Student must have taken Advanced Placement classes in at least one of the sciences and earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. Special consideration will be given for students who exhibit financial need.

LANDON M. LOWE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established in the winter of 2017 to honor the life of Landon Lowe and to continue his legacy of faith, generosity and service.  The Landon M. Lowe Memorial Scholarship will be an annual, merit based scholarship, that focuses on rewarding ambitious, goal-oriented individuals with a background of civic involvement, community service, athletic activities and participants of faith based activities or events.  Financial need is considered however, all James Monroe High School seniors are encouraged to apply.

  • Be a James Monroe High School Senior
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Plan to attend full-time, an accredited 2 or 4-year college/university in the United States, an accredited technical college or similar post-secondary educational facility.
  • Three (3) references from non-family member such as teachers, coaches, counselors and/or community leaders.

A potentially renewable award that shall cover the cost of six hours of credit per semester for two semesters.

Scholarship will be awarded to a female student attending the public college in Lewisburg, WV and carrying at least six hours per semester. Preference shall be given to students that are non-traditional (students who are not immediate high school graduates).

Distributions shall be made in two installments. Recipients may reapply but scholarships are not automatically renewed.

Students must excel in the areas of character, service to others, as well as scholastic success and promise.  Selected students will be asked to participate in an interview process.

MAXWELTON RURITAN DOUBLE YOUR DOLLARS SCHOLARSHIP

A one-time award of up to $600.00 per one student per year
 
Eligibility:
  • Selected students must reside within the Maxwelton Ruritan Club boundaries. These boundaries are as follows: Bounded on the south by the northern boundary of the City of Lewisburg; bounded on the east by the Greenbrier River; bounded on the north by the southern boundary of the Renick town limits; and bounded on the west by Fairview Road and Unus Route. Eligible children of Maxwelton Ruritan Club members living outside of these boundaries may also be selected.
  • Candidates for selection must plan to enroll or be accepted for enrollment in a recognized and approve four-year college or university after graduation.
  • Candidates for consideration may pursue any college discipline leading to an AB or BS degree.
  • Candidates are considered and selected for a scholarship by the Maxwelton Ruritan Club on the basis of faculty recommendations, scholastic achievement, financial need, community volunteer activities, and participation in school activities.
Additional Requirements:
Scholarship recipient, family member, or other representative must work four shifts at our fair concession per year or the scholarship will become void.

 





MAXWELTON RURITAN HENRY LINDSEY SCHOLARSHIP

An award of $3,000 scholarship paid out over 4 years ($375 per semester) as long as the requirements are maintained

Eligibility:
  • Selected students must reside within the Maxwelton Ruritan Club boundaries. These boundaries are as follows: Bounded on the south by the northern boundary of the City of Lewisburg; bounded on the east by the Greenbrier River; bounded on the north by the southern boundary of the Renick town limits; and bounded on the west by Fairview Road and Unus Route. Eligible children of Maxwelton Ruritan Club members living outside of these boundaries may also be selected.
  • Candidates for selection must plan to enroll or be accepted for enrollment in a recognized and approve four-year college or university after graduation.
  • Candidates for consideration may pursue any college discipline leading to an AB or BS degree.

The Mitsy McKee Scholarship is provided by Mitsy's Wings Charitable Organization, a nonprofit corporation. The Mitsy McKee Scholarship offers a grant-in-aid to a high school senior whose goal is to enter college in the field of Early Education. The scholarship is for $500. The $500 will be distributed in two $250 distributions in the first and second semester of the Freshman year.

Eligibility:
  • Applicant is a senior in good standing at GEHS
  • An overall GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Must attend an accredited institution of higher learning in the state of WV
  • Must major in education with the intent of becoming a teacher
  • Must have a written description of how the funds were used
  • Participates in school, church, and community activities
  • Selection process will include an interview

The Noble C Legg Music Scholarship is awarded in memory of Mrs. Legg. Mrs. Legg was a band and choral director in Greenbrier County for over 30 years and dedicated her life to educating students in the appreciation of music.

A woman is eligible to apply for a scholarship from P.E.O. Chapter V, Lewisburg, WV, provided she:
  • is a citizen or legal permanent resident of the U.S. or Canada, and currently resides in Greenbrier, Pocahontas, or Monroe County, West Virginia
  • is currently a rising sophomore, junior or senior at a college or university OR is beginning her 2nd year or above in a technical/vocational program; and
  • shows proof of enrollment in an accredited academic or technical educational program which, at its conclusion, will lead to employment or job advancement.

Application Policies and Procedures:

When Chapter V identifies a prospective applicant, the scholarship selection committee will arrange an interview to determine candidate eligibility.

Selected candidates will be presented to the entire chapter.  Scholarship award and amount will be voted on by majority voice vote of the chapter.

Individuals awarded a scholarship may reapply annually for subsequent scholarships, but reapplication does not guarantee award.

In association with corporate, civic and individual contributors, and with support from the State Fair Endowment, five scholarships will be awarded to graduating high school seniors and currently enrolled college students who have participated in one or more of the following areas at the State Fair:
  1. State Fair Junior and Open Livestock Shows – market animals, purebred animals and dairy.
  2. Equine Programs – State Fair’s Open Horse Show or Junior Horse and Pony Show.
  3. 4-H and FFA Youth Exhibit Program – 4-H and FFA Underwood Youth Center.

Applicants must be residents of the State of West Virginia, be pursuing a vocational trade, associate or bachelor degree, and have participated in the junior and/or open livestock shows, equine show and/or 4-H and FFA Youth Exhibit Program within the previous five (5) years.

Applications must obtain one recommendation from the following list:  his/her high school principal, guidance counselor, college advisor, or teacher

and

one character reference from a 4-H leader, 4-H agent, FFA advisor, or other individual who can attest to the student's work in the above stated areas.

Applicants may be required to participate in an interview with representatives from the State Fair of West Virginia.

Recipients of the scholarship will be announced in May and recognized at the annual State Fair.  Award will be paid to the post-secondary educational institution where the student is planning to attend or currently enrolled.

This award honors the memory of Taylor Robertson, a former student athlete at JMHS.  Taylor exemplified the term student athlete, he was in the Top 10 of his class, and a standout athlete in both football and basketball.  He used that same high character and integrity throughout his life, most notably as a husband and father.

Recipients of this merit-based award must exhibit a positive attitude, sportsmanship, and humble character.
